The Crucible review (in which the acting is solid and the production is iffy)
TL;DR the acting is top notch and some things about the staging work very well. Some other choices really broke the spell of the play for me (no pun intended).
Oh, and if you’re just here for the Whishaw content, he is excellent and compelling, and he plays John Proctor as a “New Age gentle lumbersexual” (as my friend put it), but in a way that WORKS and is in no way the hipster cliche it may sound.
I will put the rest under a cut just in case you’re totally spoiler phobic. I won’t be doing much plot spoiling (though there are some very basic plot details within), but I will talk about production details.
From what I’ve heard, I get the feeling I’m going to have similar thoughts regarding the production. I have very particular thoughts when it comes to The Crucible. I’m all for reinvention but wasn’t the whole, disturbing point of the Salem Witch Trials that obviously none of them were witches? To add in this potentially ambiguous supernatural element kind of misses the point.
