Ben Whishaw Brings New Energy, Great Hair to The Crucible || GQ

Photographs by Matt Martin

That’s why his hair is so big. It’s full of… talent.

Ben Whishaw is the first to point out that John Proctor, the character he plays in the latest stage adaptation of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, has historically been played by “a certain kind of leading actor”—the Daniel Day-Lewises and Liam Neesons of the world.

Whishaw is right, but he’s too quick to exclude himself from that club; he’s already got a robust film career. He’s immediately recognizable to most Americans as Q in Skyfall and Spectre (and to American women in particular as Keats in Bright Star), but he’s also begun gaining critical momentum. His performance as the titular London spy in the BBC miniseries London Spy made for one of the most compelling crime dramas in recent memory, and he has a memorable turn opposite Colin Farrell in this year’s dystopian comedramatragedy The Lobster as The Limping Man.

So even though Whishaw might not consider himself “a certain kind of leading actor,” when he steps out of a black car in front of the Walter Kerr Theater into a throng of Times Square-bound tourists, it’s clear he’s a Somebody.
