Okay, I have to say, Suffragette is quite good! It is very white, but I knew that going in, so I wasn’t surprised by it. What I was afraid would happen–that there would be some great male conscience awakening, and that it would steal focus from the working class women the film is supposed to be about–did not happen! Carey Mulligan is amazing, especially in her scenes with her son, and so is Helena Bonham Carter.
And Ben Whishaw’s character is as much of a dick as I hoped he’d be! But he brings a sympathetic quality to that dick that I don’t think anyone else could; you felt the difficulty of his situation, in spite of his dickishness. And … he didn’t die! I’ve seen him in two new films in the past month, and he doesn’t die in either of them. I never thought this day would come.
